Lovitz IP Law is proud to announce that the fan-favorite COMIC BOOK LAW SCHOOL program, led by founder Michael Lovitz, will once again be returning to the WonderCon convention in Anaheim March 29-31, 2024. The program, titled “Comic Book Law School 101 - An Overview of Intellectual Property Law for Creators and Companies” will take place on Friday, March 29th from 6:30-7:30 in Room 210.

San Diego Comic-Con 2023 - Comic Book Law School returns!

When the COMIC BOOK LAW SCHOOL panels return to the 2023 edition of Comic-Con International: San Diego, it will mark the 30th year since these informative and engaging classes on intellectual property law were first presented by Michael Lovitz. And this year will he once again brings three panels to the Con and is joined by guests each day, starting with a panel on Thursday covering IP basics (CBLS 101 joined by David Lizerbram) , Friday covering contracts, licenses and dealing with Hollywood (CBLS 202 joined by Monica Sullivan and Chad Tillman) and Saturday’s “hot IP topics” (CBLS 303 joined by Prof. Marc Greenberg, Prof. Betsy Rosenblatt, attorney David Branfman and Canadian attorney David S. Lipkus).

After a 2 year hiatus, Comic-Con International: San Diego, is back to in-person events, and so Michael Lovitz returns for his COMIC BOOK LAW SCHOOL presentations on intellectual property law, with three panels being offered: Thursday (CBLS 101 - the ABCs of IP law), Friday (CBLS 202 joined by Terri Lubaroff) and Saturday (CBLS 303 joined by attorneys David Lizerbram, Larry Zerner and David Branfman and Prof. Betsy Rosenblatt, attorney).

"Loan-Out Companies: Unintended Consequences for Creators?"

Michael Lovitz authored an article titled Loan-Out Companies: Unintended Consequences for Creators?, which was published in the Fall 2017 issue of Delaware Lawyer. The article focuses on the advantages, and potential pitfalls, for creators who use loan-out companies to furnish their personal services; specifically, that while loan-outs can provide individuals with many advantages, including asset protection and substantial financial and tax benefits, they also carry certain consequences as to ownership of intellectual property rights, and in particular copyright rights. Wall Street Journal Talks With Michael Lovitz About Indie Publishing Deals

The Wall Street Journal interviewed Michael Lovitz for its coverage of San Diego Comic-Con International. In the article, “At Comic-Con, Indie Publishers Tout Their Stock,” Michael notes that, at the annual event, a lot of intellectual property deals are made. “Many producers scoop up numerous options, hoping one in a few dozen might hit,” Michael said. “Independent creators can typically expect option deals that initially pay less than $10,000, with the promise to deliver a five- or six-figure check if the project actually gets produced.
